Pure’s breakout session at IOCS focused on one customer’s journey toward expanding on-premises operations with Pure’s Cloud Block Store service. James Kelly, Sr. Systems Administrator at Chapman University, joined Pure VP of Strategy Matt Kixmoeller for a spirited discussion around Chapman’s challenges with limited staffing with the requirement to deliver always-on services to a demanding higher education environment.
“Our on-prem journey was about establishing toolsets and automation around our infrastructure that would make up for our lack of people resources. We wanted to work with Pure Storage more than anybody else to accomplish this,” said Kelly.
Over the past few years, Chapman has successfully leveraged Pure FlashArray™ on-premises for mission-critical Oracle databases and SQL Server data warehouses, simplifying the complicated manual process of creating database clones for development activities. Kelly described the next step in the evolution of their IT strategy, driven by the need to attain higher levels of agility for managing backups and development in the cloud. He looked to Pure Storage and Cloud Block Store for AWS as a way to bridge this gap.
“We started our cloud journey with low-hanging fruit – backups in the cloud. And then moved database clones and copies to the cloud. These are good initial targets and we looked to extend our automation in those areas,” said Kelly. His advice for attendees at the session was to find one problematic area in their environment and look for small wins that could grow to something larger.
