According to research from Freeform Dynamics Ltd., 68% of respondents agree that re-platforming databases onto new servers and/or storage can achieve a lot. Potential benefits include the ability to easily make data in databases available to data pools for additional analysis or for cost models to ensure storage platform effectiveness over long time spans.  

Respondents were divided when it comes to database consolidation. When asked if consolidating database instances onto a single storage platform has significant benefits, only 45% of respondents agreed. Consolidation isn’t a straightforward discussion because it’s very use case dependent and requires context. That’s why many database professionals answer complex questions with “It depends.” Often, there are no simple answers. Many factors intertwine and play a big part in the decision-making process. 

In its report, “Modernizing Database Technology Stacks,” Freeform Dynamics Ltd. provides details of its research. The global survey, which included 225 respondents, gives a broader view of current topics related to data. The majority of participants were from outside the United States and represent more than 14 core businesses varying in size from small (sub-50 employees) to large (5,000+ employees).
