This VMworld morning started bright foggy and early with Cody Hosterman’s technical review of vVols. If you’re interested in vVols, he’s a good guy to follow. (vVols is kind of his thing.) Follow Cody’s posts on our blog.

Next up was ActualTech Media’s EcoCast interview with Vaughn Stewart, Pure Storage® vice president of technology alliance partners. Vaughn talked a lot about Pure’s competitive differentiation and how Pure approaches things differently than legacy storage vendors—both with the technology and Evergreen Storage™ subscription buying model.

He cited Pure’s recent quarterly results and the 28% year-over-year growth as examples of the company’s successful strategies. Vaughn’s explanation: “Pure is growing because we’re delivering on our promises.”

Pure continues to innovate. “You have to demonstrate differentiation or fall into commoditization,” he said. Pure Storage is optimized for workload domains, whether consolidated or high performance.

“Customers who are looking to make infrastructure investments are tending to look at modern options,” he explained. “As customers look to invest, at a certain point they have to look at the viability of the platform. We’ve been able to grow a lot of momentum.”

Cody Hosterman and Jason Massae

Cody Hosterman and VMware’s Jason Massae joined forces and got technical. Instead of putting together a session on their favorite bits and pieces, they based their agenda on common support calls received by VMware’s storage global service team. They covered how to address some of the most common mistakes people have when setting up storage arrays with VMware vSphere.

Consistency was a key element of Cody’s advice: “Setting things consistently is important. It’s better to do things consistently wrong than to do things sometimes right and sometimes wrong.”

Closing Out the VMworld Solutions Exchange

Today was the last day of the Solutions Exchange, which means two things: First, the information hunters were making the rounds of the booths they hadn’t visited yet. Second, the swag hunters were circling like vultures hoping to get surplus of the stuff they liked best. The Pure team had the opportunity to talk to hundreds of customers at the demo stations and in the booth theater. And, for good measure, give away a few prizes.
