Five years ago, Pure Storage established its European R&D headquarters on Narodni in the heart of downtown Prague, Czech Republic—the company’s largest R&D site outside of the U.S. Since then, the team has expanded to 600 people, representing 50 nationalities.
Recently, the Prague R&D center made headlines after hosting a two-day event highlighting the innovation taking place—including a tour of the area’s Foxconn manufacturing facility. Tech journalists and influencers heard from Pure Storage CTO Rob Lee, Paul Melmon, and Markus Grau, who spoke to the R&D strategy and wider industry trends, including AI, hyperscalers, and the cloud. Niki Armstrong and Newstream’s Brady Clough also hosted a session on the importance of STEM education and women in tech in the Czech Republic.
The team’s achievements have made headlines of their own over the years. The Prague team has accomplished milestone developments for our customers, including:
- The joint testing and design of FlashBlade//S™
- Pure Protect™ //Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS)
- Portworx Data Services, the industry’s first database-as-a-service for Kubernetes services
- Development of workload tagging, workload placement recommendations, and enhanced security and observability for Pure Fusion™
- Development of VM assessments, self-service upgrades, and mobile management in Pure1
- One-third of FlashArray™ product development activities
The Story behind Pure Storage Prague
Pure Storage is at its heart a software company. There’s close-to-the-hardware system software—the data structures and algorithms that can store and retrieve data in microseconds. There’s cloud-at-scale software. Think: storing, indexing, and analyzing a continuous stream of 50TB of new data daily from an internet of things (IoT), 365 days a year. Then, there’s machine learning and AI software to make sense of all that data. And, a rich suite of infrastructure and system test software allows the team to release products three to four times as frequently as our competitors.
It’s a big part of why Pure Storage ended up in Prague. As the engineering teams at the Santa Clara, CA, HQ grew, it became time to open another hub to accelerate that growth and bring engineers closer to customers in important markets. Our vision was for the Prague office to accelerate our ability to deliver more valuable technology and solutions to our customers sooner—and it certainly has.
