OpenStack is a widely used, open source cloud operating system managed by the non-profit OpenInfra Foundation, which claims deployment on over 40 million compute cores. With OpenStack, users can “automate all the IT things,” including provisioning, user self-service, cost reporting and billing, and other features.

Major software, hardware, and cloud vendors support OpenInfra, including Ericsson, Meta, Microsoft, and Red Hat. Pure Storage has been a long-time supporter of OpenStack, contributing over 50,000 lines of code to various projects, including 22,000 for Cinder.

Pure has had a long-time focus on optimizing its storage for use with OpenStack. While an overall OpenStack deployment can be complex, Pure helps simplify the block storage portion by offering easy integrations via its Cinder driver. Multiple storage configurations can be made directly in the OpenStack GUI, including creating and deleting volumes; attaching and detaching hosts; and creating, deleting, and reverting snapshots. You can find more details in our OpenStack solution brief

Pure also helps you protect your data via both synchronous and asynchronous data replication. In fact, Pure is the first vendor to provide upstream support for a new three-site Cinder replication model using a new “replication type” called “trisync.” Trisync allows a single volume to be created and replicated to both a synchronous target and a different asynchronous target concurrently, providing a true three-site disaster recovery configuration.
